How can I get started in training?

Anyone can begin training as long as they have an interest to learn the curriculum and methods that come with it. Balintawak Cuentada emphasizes conditioning, endurance, explosiveness, speed, control, and reaction. We gear all of our training exercises towards developing these attributes and exploring the techniques and principles of the art. All members must fill out a waiver that includes PAR-Q questions before beginning. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns about beginning as the physical activity from training could become strenuous.

Do I need to be familiar with Filipino Martial Arts before starting?

Not at all! Several of our long time practitioners had little to no martial arts experience beforehand, including two of our current Completion of the Art (COA) junior instructors. All we would expect out of practitioners is the ability to listen and train diligently.

Are there any children’s classes?

Currently our minimum acceptance age is 15 for our group classes. Any parent or guardian who is interested in private lessons for their child under 15 must be present at all times during the training session. Contact the instructor for any additional details.

What does a class normally look like?

Our fundamentals classes last one hour, during which we bow in, followed by mobility warmups, and exercises to strength and activate muscle groups to be used during the heavier phase of training. Striking drills in the air, on the heavybags, and on hand held pads could all be included. We conclude each class with a cool down that could include stationary postures and stretches.

Do you work with knives?

We focus primarily on the single rattan stick and empty hands, as this is the method emphasized by our Grandmaster Bobby Taboada. Elements of boxing, and other non armed striking techniques are incorporated as well, with the coach of improving body movement, athletic performance, and understanding of the art.

What is your class schedule?

Currently, our group class is on Sundays at 10-11 am at our 986 Amboy Avenue location in Edison, New Jersey. Anyone interested in participating should reach out to Guro Frank Zhong via our contact link at least 24 hours prior so that we may accommodate. If you’d like to simply observe, you can come at any time before class begins.
